AHS Curriculum
Decisions about curriculum are decisions about what is offered to equip a student, who is allowed to enroll and how such decisions are to be made. Therefore it is a great enterprise worthy of a good deal of reflection.
There are many components to the curriculum for students at Attleboro High School. You will see several of them below.
The Academic Calendar
How much can be offered in a given school year is, in part, a function of the academic calendar, or the amount of "time on learning" made available. Interruptions in learning occur for such things as MCAS testing, PSAT testing, and AP testing. Click here to see the Academic Calendar for 2009-2010.
Advisories
Every student who walks through our doors needs to come to know teachers who care about him and her and their progress. In order to make it possible that a student has an opportunity to be known, a four-year program of advisories is in place. Students meet in a small group with their classroom advisor (as opposed to guidance counselor) every two weeks or so. Each session has a proscribed curriculum that assures the student gets the tools he or she needs to be a success. Click here to get the Advisory Curriculum.
Advanced Placement
Did you know it is possible to earn college credit in high school and get paid for it. The Advanced Placement Program has just received a boost in the form of a grant. Read about the Advanced Placement Program and what it can do for you.
Academic Departments
Each department at Attleboro High School maintains a Web site with information useful to educators and students alike. To learn more about the goals and objectives of a particular department, select the department from this drop down list.
Graduation Requirements
Requirements for a diploma from Attleboro High School are increasingly rigorous for several reasons: the high expectations of faculty and parents for their children's achievements; federal mandates made explicit in ESEA better known as No Child Left Behind; and state graduation requirements including passing the MCAS. Below you will find a summary of the credit requirements for graduation as well as a description of the Honors Program. Remember to keep your options open! Click here for Graduation Requirements.
The Program of Studies
Every AHS student is assigned to a guidance counselor who is the best person to consult when planning a high school program. Build your four-year program with him or her and your parents carefully so that you will meet college and/or job requirements and also take advantage of the wide range of course offerings at Attleboro High School. In the back of your Program of Studies Booklet you will find a form for planning out your program. This way you can see what choices you might have to make and schedule your courses accordingly. Many courses are sequential, so it is necessary to plan ahead.
