Our school district has over 500 part-time and full-time educators including librarians, guidance counselors, nurses, adjustment counselors, school psychologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech and language pathologists, deans, head educators, and department heads. More than 75 per cent of our educators have been here over three years, and 175 of us have over 10 years in the school system.

Our district matches the state average for the percentage of highly qualified educators, most of whom hold a Master's degree. We exceed the state average when it comes to student to teacher ratio.

A New Educator Evaluation System

Educators deal with complex problems each and every day.  As professionals, they should have a key role in developing the standards that focus on the degree of competence with which they solve these challenges.  The emphasis should be on the educator’s effectiveness in fostering student achievement.

The new system replaces the current comprehensive evaluation of 16 performance standards with eight performance standards directly related to the Principles of Effective Teaching and to state performance standards. In addition, it will replace the non-compliant, single formal evaluation and three-year cycle with a DESE-compliant, biennial, formal evaluations and a four-year cycle.  The evaluation system was developed collaboratively and reflects a shared commitment to our Journey Toward Excellence. See the link on the right for an in-depth understanding of the Evalution System.

A new Design Team will convene this spring to design the evaluation instruments for the non-classroom educators.

Mentoring

Attleboro’s Mentor Program is designed by teachers for all incoming teachers, beginning or new to Attleboro.  The program’s goal is to help ensure a fully qualified and a fully satisfied teacher in every classroom.  To that end, all incoming teachers are assigned a mentor to help acclimate them to Attleboro’s policies and procedures.  In addition, mentors provide help as needed or desired in instructional techniques, curriculum, planning, assessment, and other areas for the classroom or office.  Mentors also help new teachers network with building and system colleagues to build a support team.  The program supports new teachers in other ways as well:  new teacher-mentor meetings, a monthly newsletter, training for mentors, and current research on mentoring and teaching.  The Mentor Program maintains a website at www.attleboromentorprogram.webs.com

Middle School Science Teachers Update

Middle school science educators are working together to align the curriculum and improve the quality experience of middle school scientists.  They meet voluntarily on Mondays for two hours.

The educators look at the Reading Street and developing science materials to augment the rich nonfiction science reading and concepts incorporated into the units.  With the time demand of the Math and Reading we are working carefully to make the best natural fits as possible to the standards in order to prepare our students to be 21st century thinkers.
